Nello Caldi, 96 of Bushnell, and formerly of Eastpoint and Petersburg, Ill., passed away on Friday, Nov, 2, 2012 at the Baldomero Lopez Memorial Veterans Nursing Home in Land O’Lakes.
He was born on Sept. 11, 1916 in Avon, Conn., the son of Julius and Sene (Schafer) Caldi. He married Mildred L. Gehring on Nov. 14, 1936.
He is survived by his son Verlin (Irene) Caldi of Bushnell; grandchildren Ronald, Christianne, Leah and Julia; and great-grandchildren Sabrina, John, Adam, Michael, Kyle, Hannah, Matthew, Clara, Mark and Gabriella. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Donald Caldi in 1971 and two half-brothers, John and George Zoril.
Before moving to Florida, Nello worked for many years at Ideal Industry and was later self-employed in carpentry and roofing. He was a good man who enjoyed spending time with family and friends, going fishing, catching turtles and hunting.
Mr. Caldi served in the United States Army during World War II. He is the recipient of a Purple Heart, Silver Star, Bronze Star and was a member of the VFW Post #6871 in Petersburg.
Funeral service will be Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church in Petersburg with Fr. James Palakudy officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday night in the funeral home. Burial in Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers charitable donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
