October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the “Calendar Girls” would like to remind all women to schedule a mammogram for this year.
“This is not a once-and-done test,” said Elaine Kozlowsky, president of Franklin Needs, Inc., the non-profit organization responsible for producing the annual calendar that features area women in provocative dress as a spur to increase breast cancer awareness.
“Breast cancer has to start somewhere,” she said. “Even though you may have had a clear screening in the past, or have no family history, this is no guarantee that you won’t fall victim to it.”
Franklin Needs will pay the cost of mammograms and follow-up testing to diagnosis if you are a Franklin County resident between the ages of 35 and 64 and have no health insurance.
To schedule a mammogram, call Sacred Heart Hospital in Port St. Joe at 229-5802. If you are considered disadvantaged and need transportation, please contact Croom’s Transportation in Apalachicola at 653-8132. There will be a minimal charge.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our local business community, civic and government organizations as well as the residents of Franklin County for your unwavering support. Without you this program would not be possible,” said Elaine Kozlowsky.
She said the group got a call last week from a Vestavia Hills, Alabama physician, who had stayed with his wife at the Water Street Hotel during a recent visit. “While shopping at The Tin Shed, their favorite store, they purchased a copy of our 2013 calendar,” said Kozlowsky. “The purpose of his call was to purchase 30 more copies. He said the fact they were 2013 calendars didn’t make any difference. It made us smile.”
She said that if necessary, the next calendar will come out for 2017. “Until then, we are experimenting with a limited number of posters featuring the ladies of the 2009 calendar, “ said Kozlowsky. “They will only be available at Artemis and The Grill in Apalachicola. The posters are standard size and are suitable for framing.
“Once again, we, the Calendar Girls, say thank you for your continued support,” she said. “All of us have been so blessed.”
