School registration, open house next week



The Franklin County Schools welcomes parents of elementary students to registration on Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 3-6 p.m. This for registration only, teachers will not be available.



An open house for students in pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade will be held Thursday, Aug. 15 from 3 to 6 p.m. This will be followed by freshmen and senior orientation from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.



 



Stuff the Bus with school supplies



A “Stuff the Bus with school supplies” effort is now under way to gather supplies for students and teachers as the school year approaches. For your convenience, there will be a school supply drop off bus in Carrabelle, Eastpoint, and Apalachicola this Saturday, Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.



The effort is seeking to gather items that students can use. Needed are such items as backpacks, pencils #2 and mechanical, cap erasers, pens (black and blue), red pens, expo markers, highlighters, glue sticks, colored pencils, 24-count crayons, three-ring one inch binders (not flexible, single colored), tab dividers for 3-ring binders (5 per pack), plastic folders with two pockets, multi-colored card stock, white and colored index cards, wide ruled loose leaf paper, spiral notebooks, construction paper and scissors.



The teachers wish list includes white copy paper, Clorox wipes, Kleenex, white and colored index cards, yellow plastic pocket folders, electric pencil sharpener, dry erase markers, and colored and black ink for printers cartridge sizes (Hp950XL, Hp951XL, Hp564)



 



Juvenile Justice to meet Monday



The Franklin County Juvenile Justice will hold its August meeting on Monday, Aug. 12 at the TIGERS Site, located behind the old Apalachicola High School, on school property, at 190 14th Street, Suite A. The meeting will begin at 11 a.m. All meetings of the Juvenile Justice Board and its committees are open and the public is encouraged to attend.

Officers elected to Weems Foundation



The George E. Weems Memorial Healthcare Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the following new officers have been elected for the 2013-14 year: President John Solomon; Vice-President Jody Fortunas-Wilson; Treasurer Cliff Butler; and Secretary Heather Guidry. The Foundation was established as a non-profit entity in 2010 to provide charitable, medical, scientific, educational and research aid in the form of property and services to George E. Weems Memorial Hospital. The Foundation’s newly elected officers remain committed to the Foundation’s current goal of raising funds to purchase an ultrasound for Weems Memorial Hospital.



 



Head Start now accepting applications



Head Start Centers in Eastpoint and Carrabelle are now accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year.



Head Start offers free pre-school for 3- and 4 year old children of income qualified families. Students receive early childhood development services along with medical, dental and mental health care.

Head Start is a program of the Capital Area Community Action Agency and is funded, in part, by a grant from the United Way of the Big Bend.



 



Date for budget hearings set



County commissioners have set the dates for the two public hearings on the budget as Thursday, Sept. 5 and Monday, Sept. 16. Both hearings will begin at 5:15 p.m. The city of Carrabelle will hold a budget workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 5:01 p.m.



 



Weems to purchase GPS enabled radios



At the July meeting of the Franklin County Communications Advisory Group, Craig Gibson of Weems Memorial Hospital said the hospital would purchase mobile “Unity” radios for use in ambulances and by Emergency Medical Service (EMS) crews.



The mobile radios will have the capability of monitoring and broadcasting in UHF, VHF and 800 MHz. Handheld radios will also be purchased to be used by the EMS crews. Planners hope the new radios will end chronic technical, operational and dispatch problems with the UHF system and increase compatibility with other emergency responders.



The radios are designed for use in situations with lots of background noise. They can scan continuously across all bands, and voice modes. They have built in Bluetooth technology.



A GPS receiver in the unit enables the user’s position to be broadcast securely over the air for easy tracking and rapid response in emergencies. This information can also be received by other Unity radios and displayed directly on screen for radio users.



 



Three appointed to Value Adjustment Board



At Tuesday’s county commission meeting, Clerk of Courts Marcia Johnson asked commissioners to update appointments to the Value Adjustment Board.



Commissioners William Massey and Pinki Jackel will fill the two seats reserved for county commissioners. Walter Armistead of St. George Island will return as a citizen member who owns homesteaded property within the county. Johnson said the citizen member can’t be a member or employee of any taxing authority.



Paul Cureton will again serve as special magistrate to hear the petitions. Cureton has received all the statutorily required training.



Rachel Chesnut was appointed attorney for the adjustment board, in keeping with Johnson’s recommendation. Chestnut has served in the position for the past three years and received the necessary training.
